The first Spanish poet of well-known name is born in Berceo around 1196. He receives one first education, during his childhood, in the Monastery of Suso. After his university formation in Palencia, being already he renders, he returns towards 1226 to Berceo. He arranges his work of clergyman with the one of possible notary of the Monastery of San Millán.
Due to his condition of notary, the poet would have free access to the file and library of the monastery that or at that time could totally be transferred partial or to Yuso, whose construction goes back to 1067. In the contact with the emilianense documentation he is where, without a doubt, its vocation would arise literaria.En the library of the monastery would find the vita Latin that San Braulio had dedicated to founding santo, from who first work writes the poet towards 1230 his, the Life of San Millán.
Later he would come, towards the 1236, the Life of Santo Domingo de Silos, santo born in the near Cane locality, towards the year 1000 and that being abbot of the Monastery of Suso was exiled of the kingdom of Pamplona-Nájera by king Garci'a. He passed Domingo to earth of Castile where on the primitive ruins of San Sebastián he founded the present monastery of Silos.Otras works are the Poem of Santa Oria, the Martirologio of San Lorenzo, Miracles of Our Lady, the duel of the Virgin and the loores of Our Lady, the sacrifice of the Mass, the signs of final judgment and three Himnos.Además of Libro de Alexandre, attributes three lost works to him: History of Valvanera, Transfering of the Martyrs of Arlanza, and Transfering of San Millán.
